My post-graduate research in cross-cultural communication were mainly based on observation and knowledge from actual experience in the research field. Understanding a different cultures involves parallel thinking, thus having a knowledge about history.
My analytical methods were mainly based on qualitative research rather than quantitative research—literature review referencing from recent academic publication and accredited author. Usually a statement is a pathway to understanding a different culture. A statement is also an experience from an individual in the living or working environment.
Throughout my research I came across to a book, Six thinking hats by Edward De Bono from which I took inspiration. Parallel thinking is about thinking from different perspective.
“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way." Edward De Bono
My research strategy was structured into three phrases:
Research from different cultural perspectives. It is mainly based on qualitative data analysis.
Research about the environment which is based on quantitative data analysis.
Brainstorming of idea and concept.
In design culture, brainstorming is an efficient tool to generate ideas. The overall thinking process is more likely a circular parallel thinking process. In brainstorming, one might find that almost everything are linked at a certain extent which make a cycle of ideas.
